Who's ready for some fig-tastic news? The California Fresh Fig season is officially underway! Now through November, look for plump and delicious California Fresh Figs available at most major grocery retailers. When you see them, buy them! These tiny treasures go quick and for good reason. They are delicious and nutritious! Here are some fig nutrition facts to pass along:
- California Figs are a good source of dietary fiber. Just three to five figs – dried or fresh – provide five grams of dietary fiber or 20% of the Daily Value.
- California Figs are fat, sodium and cholesterol free.
- California Figs outrank most fruits when comparing calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, manganese, and other important nutritional components.
- California Figs are rich in phytonutrients, natural compounds found in plants, which may boost immunity, slow aging and prevent or reduce the risk for chronic diseases.
- California Figs are naturally sweet. No added sugar needed!
A Variety of Reasons to LOVE California Fresh Figs!
There are five primary varieties of California Fresh Figs. Try them all to find your favorite:
- Brown Turkey. Light purple to black skin with robust flavor like a Pinot Noir. Available mid-May through November.
- Kadota. Creamy amber skin with a light flavor like a Sauvignon Blanc. Available mid-June through October.
- Mission. Purple and black skin with deep earthy flavor like a Cabernet. Available mid-May through November.
- Sierra. Light-colored skin with a fresh, sweet flavor like a Riesling. Available June through November.
- Tiger. Light yellow color with unique dark green stripes and a bright red-purple interior fruit with fruity, raspberry, citrus flavor like a Sparkling Rosé. Available mid-July through November.
